So time and time again, we find ourselves kicking off our shoes and heading for the sand. Sure, we may be shaking the little pebbles from our camera bag for the rest of eternity, but for us, those emotional shots in the crashing waves and breathtaking pink sunsets are totally worth it.
Here in New Jersey, if an engagement session is April-September, there’s a huge chance our couples will want to head to the beach. From Asbury Park to Long Beach Island, we’ve been there, and we’re ready to be there again! To prepare you for your session, we’ve put together some tips for your beach engagement session!
Deep down, you know this one . . . but when you’re adding that gorgeous flowy gown into your cart while sipping a glass of merlot, you’re going to instinctively think ‘now the shoes!’. I get it, girlfriend, those heels would look totally cute but skip the heel, heck, skip the shoe altogether! We’re going barefoot for this session, so use that shoe budget for a mani-pedi instead and you are good to go!
We’re totally guilty of going against our own word on this one – we pull up to the parking lot and immediately go OH NO! We reach for the emergency backup can we keep in the car and that bad boy is empty. Last season, we got bit up by horeflies so bad at a session that I ruined our silk sheets by smothering my legs in anti-itch ointment. Our groom had a little blood dripping down his leg. It was . . . just bring the bug spray, okay? You can thank us later, when you’re not finding gnats crusted into your foundation (ew).
Those knee-deep in salt water, kissing under the sunset, waves crashing to the shore shots are the ones you’re going to hang in the living room – they’re the Facebook profile photos, the Save the Dates choice, the ones you post over and over again on Instagram. We’ll hold onto our cameras tight and we’re willing to drive home soaked, because those are the pictures that are so, so worth it. So bring an outfit you’re willing to get wet in (avoid white or super thin fabric) and we’ll close out the session with these shots!
It’s going to be hot and you’re going to want lounge out in comfy shorts, but bring a pair of chinos for those dressier shots – we can totally get fancy at the beach! Wanna wear a suit? GO FOR IT!
The beach can get really windy and we don’t want you to look back disappointed at the fly aways and tangles! Bring along a brush that you can occassionally whip out if the wind is messing your locks.
